Patriots Score and Score Some ... and some more...

In today's NFL, the 2007 Patriots aren't supposed to happen. The team that thrashed the Washington Redskins 52 to 7 and could have easily scored 70+ points is supposed to be playing in 1923 instead of 2007. No NFL team is supposed to average 41 points a game. No NFL team is supposed to win by an average of 21 points. As I said last week, they should be illegal.

The first thing that stuck out to me about yesterdays game was one of the first graphics that Fox showed of Jason Campbell's 2007 statics. So far in the 2007 regular season, Campbell had only thrown for five touchdowns. It sort of was a good reality check... wow, I guess everyone doesn't throw at least three touchdown passes each week. Coming into this game I really didn't actually known much about the Redskins offense but from the first Redskin drive - it was very apparent that the Skins weren't going to be able to do anything vs. the Patriots defense. All Pro defensive end Richard Seymour returned from being on the Patriots PUP list for the last seven weeks and contributed to the Patriots shutting down the Skins rushing attack. Because Washington couldn't get anything done on the ground they had to go to their air attack which was kind of lame (197 yards, one interception, one touchdown). In very few words - the Washington offense stinks and this Patriots defense is really good. Good enough to score just as many points (seven) in fact as the Washington offense.

The Patriots offense was sort of effective yesterday, Brady threw for 306 yards and three touchdowns, rushed for two touchdowns. Laurence Maroney gained 75 yards on 14 rushing attempts and looked completely healthy. The little guy that no one can cover, Wes Welker, had another huge game with nine receptions for 89 yards and a touchdown. Overall, the offense had 486 yards scored on seven of their ten drives and only punted twice in the entire game. And remember, the Skins were one of the best defensive teams in the NFL, before they faced the Patriots, only giving up an average of something like 17 points per game. I guess the Patriots offense is just really good - and it's getting better.

Mike Vrabel had a monster day with eleven total tackles, three sacks and three forced fumbles - one of which was returned for a touchdown by Rosevelt Colvin. To add to all of that, he also caught a one yard touchdown pass. He should easily win defensive player of the week.

As far as the running up the score thing. The game was really over early in the third quarter. If the Patriots really wanted to run up the score then they would have scored 60+ points instead of a meager 52. It's not like these guys are being forced by their parents to play football and make millions anyways.

Next week it's the 7-0 Colts.

You know something's up

...when your fans are shouting not to sign the 2007 AL MVP. I actually think A-Rod would fit right into the Sox's club house and give them a little something that they've been missing since 2004... but then again...

Take my advice - sign him!

Patriots vs. Washington Preview

Just really quickly; the Patriots keys to staying unbeaten and victory over the Redskins tomorrow.

1. Protect Brady - if Brady has time to throw then this game should be a easy win. If the Skins get in Brady's face expect a close game. Guys to watch out for include former Bill London Fletcher, OL/DE Andre Carter, Marcus Washington and Cornelius Griffin. So far this season the Patriots offensive line has done an excellent job of keeping Brady safe but this is the best overall defense (not the best pass-rush defense though) the Patriots have gone up against so far this season.

2. Get the running game going - Laurence Maroney looked good in his six rushing attempts last week - the question is how will he do vs a staunch Redskins defense. He doesn't have to have a super-duper 100+ yard game in order to be effective; he just needs to be enough of a threat to force not allow the Skins to put less then five guys in the box. My perdiction is that Maroney will have two touchdowns and 94 yards rushing.

3. Cover Chris Cooley - the Redskins tight end is their second best receiver and biggest target in the endzone. If the Patriots can shut him down, then Skins quarterback Jason Campbell is going to throw more then one pick and get sacked quite often. So far this season the Patriots have done a decent job of shutting down opposing teams tight ends; free agency signing Adalius Thomas is one of the top coverage linebackers in the NFL.

4. Make Clinton Portis have just another day at work - every season since he was traded to the Redskins for cornerback Champ Baily, Portis has become less effective as a running back. So far this year he has had a pretty good season - rushing for 406 yards and five touchdowns in six games. Not great numbers but decent ones. Jason Campbell is going to have to rely on Portis to give him time to throw by making the play action pass work. If Portis can't find any room to run vs the Patriots defense (which has been rather weak vs the run the last two games) then the Skins are going to lose this game very badly.

5. Don't shot themselves in the foot - there's a saying that if you were going to hit in to a double-play you mine as well strike out instead. The same thing applys for this game as well. The only way the Patriots are going to lose this game is by beating themselves. It could be a couple of bad throws by Brady that end up being picks or terrible special teams play ... just be perfect to stay perfect.

My best guess is that the Patriots win this game 42 to 10.

Pats Go Dolphin Fishing in Miami: Win 49 to 28*

Yep, this Patriots offensive should be made as illegal as fishing for Dolphins. Because NFL teams are just as helpless as cute little fishes against Tom Brady and Co. This week remember to watch the news for Congress to pass a punitive bill against the Patriots offense (Ron Paul will of course vote against it because it's unconstitutional - and Ted Kennedy will vote against it too! A first!)

The Patriot entered the game without two key - cut that - three key players: Ben Watson, Sammy Morris and Richard Seymour. You could throw Mike Wright into the mix of guys missing since he started in last weeks game as defensive end. Running back Laurence Maroney was active and playing for the first time in three weeks but fortunately hardly had to play at all. As soon as the game began, and the Patriots offensive got the football, it was clear why the Pats were 6 & 0 and the Fins were 0 & 6. The Dolphins can't stop anyone! Tom Brady ended up throwing six touchdown passes in the game (one to Stallworth, one to Kyle Brady, two to Moss and two to Welker) but if the Patriots really felt like it I have no doubt that they could have as a team rushed for over 200 yards in the game. Unlike other teams in the NFL however, the Patriots don't care about making sure to have a balanced offense when their murdering a team one-dimensionally. The most blatant example of this type of mindset was last years game vs the Vikings when the Pats didn't even really have a rushing attempt until the forth quarter. Hey, their winning. Who's going to say their wrong?

Oh yeah, Willy Andrews, Pats special teams star and all around handy man, returned a kickoff 70(?) yards for a touchdown in the second quarter. The only non Brady Patriots touchdown of the day.

The reason why I added a * to the title is because the Dolphins score is more inflated then Barry Bonds home run numbers or the fact that the Red Sox just won three games in a row (yawwnnnn....zzzzzzzzzzzz.... the Rockies just won 20 out of 21 and no one even noticed...). Just look at how and when the Dolphins scored their points.

After a scoreless first quarter...
*four yard touchdown run (QB sneak) by Cleo Lemon. Brings score to 14-7
The Fins only non* touchdown
scoreless half-time...
scoreless third quarter... backups enter the game.... backups feel very high urgency about protecting their teams slim 42 to 7 lead. WE MUST STOP THE FINS!!!
*OH NOSSS! THIS CAN"T BE HAPPENING!!!! Former preseason Patriot, running back Patrick Cobbs ("hi again guys, remember me?") bangs into the endzone on a one yard run. The protected Animal Channel(C) mammals are coming back!

*Only a 1:05 later - the Fins defense strikes! Pats backup quarterback, Matt Cassel, is picked off by Miami defensive end and 2006 defensive player of the year - Jason Taylor. Taylor returns the interception 36 yards for a touchdown with only Cassel bothering to give chase. The rest of the Pats players don't seem to care or notice. Score 21 to 42.
(Ha! BB sends in Brady to throw another easy touchdown pass to Wes Welker to get the points back and make it a 28 point lead again)

*This comeback is FOR REAL!!!! With an amazing 3:45 left on the clock. Fins seventh-string running back Jesse Chatman runs seven yards right up the gut through a gapping hole for a touchdown. Replays show that the whole Dolphins offensive line was bearhugging the Pats defensive players (Rodney Harrison was tackled...) but no flags are thrown. The question really is though - where is the Patriots urgency on defense? Don't they know this is a close game? Score 49 to 28.

Ok, that wraps up the Fins scoring drives. Overall they had 25 first downs and 382 total yards on offense. The Patriots defense forced two turnovers, Randall Gay had an interception and Ty Warren recovered a fumble. Basically, this wasn't the best defensive game for the Patriots but then - the game was over by the end of the first half.

Offensively, wow. Brady throws six touchdowns, Maroney hardly has to play, and apparently no one gets injured. Just look at these numbers.

Wes Welker: 9 rec, 138 yds, 2 tds
Randy Moss: 4 rec, 122 yds, 2 tds (both highlight types - on the first he grabbed the football away from the defender and on the second he snatched it with one hand while two Fin DB's climbed all over him.
Donte' Stallworth: 3 rec, 51 yards, 1 td (another amazing catch and run touchdown this week for Stallworth. This time it was a 30 yarder on the PAts first drive in which he ran through four Miami defenders to score.

Next week it's the Washington Redskins - the only NFL team BB has not beat in his entire head coaching career.

Why did it have to happen?

Let us try to find meaning in this senseless act. There has to a be an upside to the Sox winning... I can't find it though:(

Would have made a great story. Too bad it's going to be just another old boring World Series between the Rockies and Sox's. It didn't have to be that way.

Huckabee makes liberals tremble!

MikeHuckabee.com - I Like Mike!
Just out from the Washington Post:

When I sat down on Friday evening with a group of Linn County [Iowa] Democratic Party officials and activists to talk about politics,... I wanted to know which candidate they thought might prove toughest in a general election race.

Surprisingly they named Huckabee. McCain, they said, was past his time. Romney's flip-flops, they suggested, would make him an easy target in a general election. They also said they found him too slick and plastic.
Romney's an easy target, but Huck scares liberals -- because they know he's a likable guy, and that's what wins elections. WE LIKE MIKE!

The Huckster Moves Up in Iowa

Huckabee has moved up into third place in front of Giuliani in a recent poll conducted in Iowa. The Huckster won (well basically won...) the Iowa Straw poll a few months ago so he defiantly has a chance of winning the Iowa Caucus in my view. Giuliani, Romney and Thomson can only go down in the polls so we'll see what happens. A victory in Iowa and South Carolina (and decent showing in New Hamsphere) would be a big step eventually winning the GOP presidential nomination.

We shall see...

I just got back from my SAT test this morning. Everything went pretty normal so hopeful I'll get a good score but there's really no why to tell how well I did. I'm going to be gone next week Mon-Sat so don't expect and posts unless Rex does something unusual.

Patriots Roar in Cincinnati

Patriots win 34 to 10. But....they didn't get 38 points. Randy Moss didn't have over 200 yards. Tom Brady threw for less then a thousand yards. The defense only had two interceptions.

Fire someone! It's a disaster!
